Head to Honduras
There are many reasons to head to Honduras. The first reason is to visit the island of Roatan! It is located 40 miles from the mainland and is the largest of the Bay Islands.
This oasis is home to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, second largest to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Divers from all over the world visit the island. Lucky tourists who stumble upon such an opportunity to experience this, like myself, take full advantage snorkeling in between sunbathing. With an illogical phobia to marine life, I knew I had to see the coral reef for myself. I was fortunate enough to meet a patient and knowledgable snorkel guide, Cory. We swam only five minutes into the crystal waters of the Caribbean Sea and practiced breathing through the equipment. After a few panic attacks and several moments wading my head above water to collect myself, I had reached the first trench. Surrounded by fish of all colors and sizes amongst the coral of all shapes. I knew it was a significant moment and I loved having that sight, although it took just as significant effort to reach it.
I also visited Gumbalimba Park. The park is home to various animals such as iguanas, monkeys and exotic birds native to the island. The botanical gardens were rooted with over 200 plant and tree species. There was a hanging bridge over a fishing pond.
Between the animals, lush land, generous locals, blue water and all that lives in it - I was in Honduras heaven.
